Aaron Winter Struggles with Total Football Plan at Toronto
Aron Winter arrived in Toronto last year promising a "total football" style of play that would take Toronto FC into the MLS playoffs for the first time. Late last season, momentum was building in the right direction ? but a wretched 2012 campaign has put major question marks over the validity of his three-year plan. This year was supposed to be the big breakthrough, but it may yet end with a big break up.
A 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union on Saturday has bought Winter a little breathing room but, coming into the game having lost all nine of their MLS games this season, it is hardly cause to pop open the champagne, particularly considering Philadelphia have the next worst record in the Eastern Conference and it took Toronto 88 minutes to find the winner.
Still, Winter believes it is a step in the right direction that will give morale a timely jolt. The MLS season now takes a two-week break for international fixtures, making it all the more crucial to have ended the horror run of results.
"I?m very relieved ? after nine games and zero points, it?s a big relief," he explained, clearly thankful to finally be able to discuss a victory. "Now everyone can relax and enjoy the break, and we can prepare well for the next game. It has come at a great time."
But what about his bold claim earlier in the month that the team could still make the playoffs?
"I stand by that, always," he explained. "But for now, we have to take things game by game. The most important thing was to get this win and give everyone some confidence."
Though the playoff dream is precisely that, Winter?s optimism is admirable and he deserves a change in fortunes. Problems have been sprouting everywhere in his second season at the helm, from calamitous defensive errors to frustrating injuries to ill-timed comments from Saturday?s match-winner Danny Koevermans, who called the club "the worst team in the world" last week.
Throughout, Winter has remained fairly unruffled by the side?s poor form, and the Dutchman received a boost last week when Toronto FC clinched the Canadian Championship, a competition that pits the club against Vancouver Whitecaps, Montreal Impact and FC Edmonton. In the MLS, of course, it has been a different story, and the success of Montreal and Vancouver (12 and 19 points, respectively) has only served to highlight the frustrating setbacks at Toronto?s BMO Field.
But Toronto FC?s struggles are not for the lack of spending. The team has three of the nine MLS players making more than $1M a year (Koevermans, Torsten Frings and Julian de Guzman) and Winter is also able to call on Colombian international Joao Plata and former Manchester United defender Richard Eckersley. The talent is there but the performances have been lacking ? even against Philadelphia, numerous chances were squandered before Koevermans rode to the rescue.
And so, despite the continued rabid support in a city which is otherwise dominated by ice hockey, Toronto FC are set to miss the playoffs for the sixth straight year. As for Winter, his future will hinge on whether the weekend win is a springboard for a surge up the table and whether his players show signs of fully settling into the current system. Should the team revert to the woeful form that brought about the slump, the club will be left with a tough decision to make.
One small note of comfort is the fact that Toronto FC are not the only MLS club falling short of expectations this year. David Beckham and Los Angeles Galaxy ? the defending MLS champions no less ? are floundering in the Western Conference, propping up the table with 11 points from 13 games. FC Dallas, MLS Cup finalists in 2010, sit one place and two points above the Galaxy.
Still, that will matter little to Winter, who has plenty of more pressing matters to address in the coming weeks. Toronto FC may have brought their losing run to an end but it will take more progress to really lift the pressure on the Dutchman?s shoulders.

Fund managers are lobbying regulators for tax cuts.
Pham Dinh Thi, deputy director of the Ministry of Finance?s Tax Policy Department, said corporate income tax (CIT) reductions for the fund management industry should be considered. ?Commercial banks, the main capital mobilisation channel of Vietnam?s economy, are now subject to a CIT rate of 25 per cent. Therefore, we must study and discuss possibilities to lower taxes for fund management companies,? said Thi.
The statement was delivered at a Hanoi-based securities business tax policy conference last week where several fund managers demanded a CIT rate lower than the common 25 per cent tax rate, to stimulate the young fund management industry.
?Stock markets are usually the main capital mobilisation channel attracting 80 per cent of a society?s mobilisation capital. But that?s not the case in Vietnam where banks are the main channel for short and medium-term funds,? he said. State Securities Commission (SSC) Fund Management Department head Pham Thanh Long said a tax policy review was necessary. ?It is necessary to make tax policy changes to encourage investors to deposit in long-term investment funds, instead of speculative funds,? he said.
Long considered the new fund groups, including real estate investment funds, especially real estate investment trust (REIT) funds which mainly invest in housing and leasing, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and securities investment companies, as the new pillars of the investment fund industry, together with current pillars such as state-managed social insurance funds.
Thi said he would propose a ?specific circular? to guide securities businesses. ?It?s a rare case to have a specific circular to guide one sector. But with so many tax policy problems outstanding in the securities sector, I think a specific circular is essential.?
A representative of Vietnam Fund Management Club said according to this club?s calculations, fund investors always had to bear 5 per cent losses compared with other stock market investors due to tax policies and called for a tax reduction for this industry.

Karoon Gas Updates on Boreas-1 Drilling Australia - LNG World News
Karoon Gas Australia announced that today, the Boreas-1 well was completing pressure testing of the BOPs on surface.
Since the last report, the 12-1/4? hole section was drilled from 3908 m to 4009 m, 9-5/8? casing was run and cemented, and the BOP and marine riser were pulled from the well. The BOPs were then serviced. Drilling of the 8-1/2? hole section is expected to commence early next week.
The Transocean Legend semi-submersible rig is drilling the exploration well, which is operated by ConocoPhillips. ConocoPhillips is the operator of the jointly held WA-314-P, WA-315-P and WA-398-P Browse Basin permits containing the previously announced Poseidon and Kronos gas discoveries.
Karoon Gas Australia Ltd holds 40% of the permit WA-315-P and WA-398-P, and 90% of permit WA-314-P. Boreas-1 is located approximately 4 kilometres south of Poseidon-1 in WA-315-P on a large tilted fault block which is part of the of the north-east trending structural high of the greater Poseidon structure.
The objective of the well is to test the extent, presence and quality of reservoirs within the Boreas-1 fault block.

VIRGINIA WATER, England May 26 (Reuters) - Lee Westwood's up and down display in Saturday's third round summed up the world number three's wildly fluctuating week at the PGA Championship.
The former European number one fired his second two-under-par 70 of the tournament but a three-over 75 sandwiched inbetween has stymied his bid to make a move on the players at the top of the leaderboard.
Westwood said he had been fighting a hook throughout the event and had missed too many short putts.
"I'm just hitting a bit of a pull now and again which is destroying me," the 39-year-old Englishman told reporters after finishing on one-under-par 215 following a day of swirling 40-kph winds at a sun-baked Wentworth.
"It's my bad shot when I'm not swinging very well and I'm not swinging very well at the moment. It's a case of doing a bit more practice.
"I'm a bit tired. I've played a lot this year already and there's been a lot of going backwards and forwards (across the Atlantic)."
Several times one of the bridesmaids and never yet the bride in major championships, Westwood has once again been haunted by a cold putter at the European Tour's flagship event.
"Over the week I've just missed a few too many short putts," he explained. "I missed three times inside five feet today at the eighth, 10th and 12th."
Westwood amassed six birdies on Saturday but a triple-bogey seven at the 13th proved extremely costly.
"I hit it in the fairway trap on 13 and my escape plugged in the face," he said. "I then dropped the ball in the bunker, it plugged again, hit a seven-iron to 30 feet and holed it.
"Then I hit a five-iron at the next and lipped out for a hole-in-one."
A BMW is on offer for an ace at the 179-yard 14th and Westwood said it was a prize he would have cherished.

FHA rules on lending for condos have been in the news recently. The rules that govern which apartment buildings the agency can offer lending at are blamed for limiting demand in the condo market and even driving down prices.
The FHA?s rules restrict the FHA from lending in complexes where:
- More than 50% of the units are not owner occupied
- More than 25% of a complex?s square footage is for commercial use
- 15% of the units are 30 days late or more on their HOA dues
While the rules are intended to protect the agency from risks, they may not be appropriate for the post-bust real estate environment. Job losses, stagnant incomes, and high unemployment have caused delinquencies on HOA dues to rise, limiting some apartment complexes? eligibility for FHA financing programs. Limitations on the number of rental occupants has reduced the number of potential buyers for units in non-eligible condominium buildings and some argue that this pattern has hampered the recovery of markets like Phoenix and Miami where investors are buying up units to convert into rentals.
As pictured above, the 90+ day delinquency rate for the United States on FHA-financed mortgages for both single family and condominiums climbed steadily from 2007 to date. However, the delinquency rate on condominiums is well below that of single family (SFR) properties as evidenced by the spread. While the spread between the two rates has eased, it remains significant.
Furthermore, this pattern of a significant spread between the delinquency rates on single family and condominium loans backed by the FHA is evident in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC. Warren, a Harvard Law School professor and Democrat who is running in Massachusetts against Republican incumbent Sen. Scott Brown, was listed as Native American in several law school directories. Warren has said that her "family lore" described Indian ancestors, and the New England Genealogy Association said it found indications ? but not proof ? that Warren had a Cherokee great-great-great grandmother, which would make her 1/32 Indian.
"I'm proud of my heritage," Warren said Thursday. Asked how she knew it included Native Americans, she replied, "Because my mother told me so."
Her opponents question whether Warren chose this heritage to gain advantages available to Indians and other underrepresented groups in academia.
"Warren has zero evidence that she is at all Native American," said Brown's campaign manager, Jim Barnett. The genealogy association acknowledges that it found only secondary references to Cherokee family members, not primary sources such as marriage, birth or census records.
Among Native Americans, the varying opinions demonstrate that Indian identity is subjective even among Indians themselves.
When David Eugene Wilkins first saw Warren interviewed during her nomination to a federal post, he was smitten by her intelligence and politics. But when he heard about her claims of Indian ancestry, "I shook my head and said, 'Oh no.'"
"For us it was always about allegiance rather than biology or ancestry," said Wilkins, an enrolled member of the Lumbee tribe and professor of American Indian studies at the University of Minnesota.
"It's where you place your political, cultural, emotional allegiance. She lived her entire life and never had any association whatsoever with any community. So something doesn't wash for me," Wilkins said.
But David Treuer, an award-winning writer and Ojibwe Indian from Leech Lake Reservation in Minnesota, said there is a difference between Indian identity and ancestry ? you can have one without the other.
"An Indian identity is something someone claims for oneself; it is a matter of choice," Treuer wrote in a Washington Post essay titled, "Elizabeth Warren says she's Native American. So she is."

Fat Joe has one heck of a poker face. Back in April, after studio pictures of Joe Crack, Kanye West, Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes and DJ Khaled made their way onto Twitter, the Bronx rapper played coy when MTV News asked him about the photos.
"Hip-hop moments, that's it. It was just a back-in-the-days hip-hop moment," Joe Crack told MTV News about the all-star studio session one week after the pictures leaked. "For, like, a whole week, we've just been vibing, everybody's been vibing with each other, and it's a beautiful thing."
Joey told MTV News that he, Yeezy and the gang were "discussing hip-hop politics," but they were clearly up to so much more. On Wednesday night, the Terror Squad leader hit iTunes with "Pride N Joy," a breezy love ode featuring Kanye, Miguel, Jadakiss, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey), DJ Khaled, Roscoe Dash and Busta Rhymes.
Only Yeezy and Joe actually rap on the track, trading rhymes back and forth for a few bars. "Birkin bags made of python, she's a beautiful nightmare," Joe raps before 'Ye chimes in spitting, "Turn the lights on." Interestingly, Joe recruited capable MCs Miguel and Roscoe Dash not to rap on the track, but rather to harmonize on the song's hook.
Cook Coke Crack continues to serenade the object of affection, lyrically showering her with expensive presents like Christian Louboutin shoes and courtside Knicks tickets. On the song's bridge, Jadakiss, Mos Def, Khaled and Bus support Joey's lavish gift-giving when they sing, "And even if she all 'bout the money I don't really care/ I got a lot of money there's enough of it that we can share."
"Pride N Joy" carries a sort of 1990s Native Tongues vibe popularized by groups like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. In that case, maybe Joe's original description of the studio session wasn't too far off after all; maybe it was just "a back-in-the-days hip-hop moment."

We spotted the dudes behind the ZBoard at TechCrunch Disrupt earlier this week, but we weren't content to just ride the electric skateboard up and down the halls of Pier 94. We asked them to take a walk with us to Washington Square Park so we could take the board for a spin in a more realistic setting -- also, any excuse to skip out of work a bit earlier to go skating in the park on a sunny Friday afternoon is hard to turn down. We initially asked them to meet us at one of New York City's many skate parks, but they balked at the suggestion -- after all, it's more of a commuting board than anything else. It's big and fairly heavy, so attempting to go vert with the thing is pretty much out -- grinding and kickflips are likely off the table, too.
Co-creator Geoff Larson told us he managed to get the thing up on two wheels, but that's about the limit of trickery at the moment -- we're sure that'll change pretty quickly, as soon as more boards make their way into the hands of the public. In the meantime, the ZBoard is all about getting around, giving you about 10 miles on a single charge. Larson added that one skater said he planned to use his ZBoard to make the long trip to the skatepark and back, carrying his manual board along for the ride.
