Microsoft clearly isn?t selling Surface RT tablets as quickly as it wants to. The company slashed its suggested retail prices for the Windows 8 device last week by $150 for each model. The 32 GB Surface RT now costs $349 while the 64GB model costs $449, meaning that the 10.6-inch Surface RT now costs just $20 more than Apple?s 7.9-inch, 16GB iPad Mini.
Surface sales have definitely falled short of projections for Microsoft. The company has yet to release specific sales figures, but initial shipments far ?surpassed actual units sold?and by March analysts were predicting the Surface could go the way of Microsoft?s failed Zune MP3 player.
The recent price cut on the Surface RT should go into effect soon, though Staples has already instituted the new deal. If you?re looking for a decently priced tablet this isn?t a bad option (though we prefer the Surface Pro with the full Windows 8 experience), but you may want to hold off. We?re expecting a bevy of new tablets to be announced this fall including a 7-inch Surface, new versions of the iPad and iPad Mini, and a successor to Google?s Nexus 7.
