EA Sports: PS3 and Xbox 360 Still a Focus for Future FIFA Titles

Video game developer EA Sports says that despite the launch of the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony, it still has long-term plans to add new features to future FIFA game launches on current-generation home consoles.Sebastian Enrique, a producer working at the company, tells MCV that, ?It?s always a huge challenge making FIFA. We are not resting on our laurels. Just because next-gen is coming, it doesn?t mean current-gen is being left behind. We are doing everything to make the current generation of FIFA fantastic.?

He adds, ?We have everything left to achieve. We are super ambitious. Usually when we build the game, and we decide what we are putting in it, there are three things we try to do ? innovate, polish and listen to the community. There is still a lot of things we want to do.?

The developer says that despite the innovation introduced in each new version of FIFA, EA Sports knows the weak spots of the experience and always has long-term plans to bring the gamer closer to the real-world sport.

The versions of FIFA 14 that will be offered on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 are using a new Ignite engine, which EA Sports says is too resource intensive to run on the PC.

It will allow gamers to play a deeper simulation that includes more information about the physics of both the players and the ball.

FIFA 14, in all its versions, introduces a new level of intelligence for teammates and makes sure that skilled players have a bigger impact on the match.

There are also improvements linked to the Ultimate Team mode.

The game is expected to launch on the PC and current-gen devices on September 24 in North America and three days later in Europe.

Sequoia Makes Another Bet In Gaming By Leading $9M Round For Android-Focused Kiwi

kiwi-logoKiwi, an Android-focused gaming studio from an experienced team that made titles at Playdom, just raised $9 million in round led by Sequoia Capital. The company is run by Omar Siddiqui, who oversaw games like Gardens of Time and City of Wonder at Playdom, the social game maker that Disney bought for around $750 million including earnouts back in 2010. Siddiqui, who has had stints at McKinsey and Bain Capital, joined Playdom after he and his co-founder Shvetank Jain built and sold their startup Trippert Labs to the company. Kiwi is their next gaming company and it is laser focused on the Android platform with casual simulation titles like Shipwrecked. Siddiqui has quietly built up a 160 person company with employees in both Bangalore and Palo Alto. They have five titles on Google Play’s top grossing charts for the U.S. right now. They decided to focus on Android back in 2011, when it wasn’t clear at all that the platform could or would close the monetization gap with iOS. But that gap is gradually closing as Google has stepped up efforts to get Android users to register with credit cards. Siddiqui said that the amount of revenue a top 10 grossing game makes on the platform appears to have doubled in the last year. While I’ve written that venture capitalists are a little more skeptical than they used to be about gaming investments, it looks like Sequoia made this bet on the strength of Siddiqui’s track record and their relationship with him. Sequoia’s Alfred Lin, who was the COO of Zappos before joining the firm, is leading this deal, while another investment partner, AdMob founder Omar Hamoui, also already sits on the board as an earlier personal investor. Guitar Hero co-creator Charles Huang and SV Angel also participated. “Everyone likes to pick on Zynga,” Siddiqui said. “But the reality is that there are very few kinds of companies that can go from 0 to $1 billion in revenue inside of five years. We’ve been doing games and game-related stuff for years and we thought — if we had a chance to do it all over again, what could we do to create the best of what a games company could be?” Sequoia has one other bet in a first-party mobile game developer through Pocket Gems, which also competes with Kiwi on Android through titles like Tap Paradise Cove.

How Ted Cruz Accidentally Saved Social Security

U.S. President Barack Obama speaks about the economy during a visit to Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois July 24, 2013. In the right context, the defund-Obamacare-first Republicans might actually enable a bargain

On July 9, a small, bipartisan group of congressmen met with their unofficial saints. Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles were back together, pitching them in private about the revised version of their deficit reduction plan, and about how a grand bargain on spending really could still happen. Really.

?What a wonderful group!? remembers Simpson. ?They work with each other. They talk to each other. You know that [Montana Sen. Max] Baucus and [Michigan Rep. Dave] camp are working on tax reform already, so we don?t need to prod them. We say, pull up a chair. We don?t serve any bullshit or mush. We?ll tell you where your country is.?

Unexpectedly, July was shaping up to be a good month for the austerity crowd. They?d been losing their best argument, watching the deficit fall from $1.1 trillion last year to $642 billion this year. The grim experiences of nations committed to actual austerity programs hadn?t helped that group, either. But the relevant parties were listening, and a posse of Senate Republicans was meeting with White House negotiators about a possible bargain. The White House is still open to the package of tax hikes and entitlement cuts it proposed in the last few showdowns?$400 billion in Medicare cuts, maybe chained CPI.

The last few times the deal-makers got here, they were undone by conservatives who didn?t want to bend on taxes. Things change: The austerity crowd may be undone, one more time, by conservatives who view the coming vote to fund the government?deadline Sept. 30?as the ?last chance? to defund the Affordable Care Act.

Completely predictable, and yet it came out of nowhere. Last week, Utah Sen. Mike Lee unveiled a letter co-signed by 11 colleagues, pledging that they ?will not support any continuing resolution or appropriations legislation that funds further implementation or enforcement of Obamacare.? North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows Xeroxed that letter in the House, and quickly made 66 foxhole buddies.

The rest of the party?and keep in mind, it?s a party wholly committed to destroying Obamacare?has reacted with a combustible mix of disgust and panic. The continuing resolution (and after that, the fight over the debt limit) was an opportunity to force the White House to deal on entitlements. ?The one thing that we have achieved is that we have actually cut discretionary spending through sequestration and the Budget Control Act,? Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn pointed out. ?That?s one thing we?ve done great for the country, and you?re going to put that at risk trying to achieve something that is impossible for us to achieve.?

But the Republicans demanding a repeal vote are changing the conversation. In their corner, demanding as a pH test of conservatism, are the Club for Growth, Heritage Action, FreedomWorks, and the other usual suspects. Every Republican discussed as a credible 2016 candidate (Rubio, Cruz, Paul) signed the letter. They?ve sold it to conservative media as much as they?ve sold it to anybody else.

?We need the American people to stand with us in demanding that not another cent be spent on implementing ObamaCare,? wrote Rubio in an editorial for RedState.com. ?At that point, the President will have a decision to make: sign it and keep the government open, or veto it and shut down the government.?

Cruz spent Monday in conversation with conservatives, starting with Fox News and continuing with Glenn Beck and Missouri radio talker Dana Loesch. ?If we surrender, as Republicans are so good at, it?s guaranteed we will not win this fight,? he said on Fox. Talking to Loesch, he reiterated what was written in the letter, the claim that the delay in the employer mandate meant that Senate Republicans had no duty to fund the whole law.? ?There is a powerful defeatist approach among Republicans in Washington,? he told her. ?The House of Representatives should pass a continuing resolution that funds the entire government, except Obamacare.?

In the right context, the defund-Obamacare-first Republicans might actually enable a bargain. Most deals begin with unreasonable demands and end in the center. Move the center to the right and, theoretically, you end up closer to that side than to the president?s side.

One problem with that: Republicans already tried to do this. They were in a stronger political position. They failed. In 2011, the new Republican Congress tried to defund Obamacare, and for their troubles the president mocked them. ?I said to them, ?Let me tell you something: I spent a year and a half getting healthcare passed,? ? said Obama at an April 2011 fundraiser. ??I had to take that issue across the country and I paid significant political costs to get it done. The notion that I'm going to let you guys undo that in a six-month spending bill?' I said, 'You want to repeal health care? Go at it. We'll have that debate. You're not going to be able to do that by nickel-and-diming me in the budget. You think we're stupid?? ?

So the threat to Obamacare doesn?t actually scare the left. To them, it feels like the demands conservatives have made on taxes in every round of the Debt Wars. Their refusal to raise taxes, even on Social Security, has effectively checkmated the administration on its entitlement plans. The shrinking deficit has made it easier for progressives to defend entitlements as they are.

The grand-bargainers are well aware of that. ?It?s just great that the deficit is down,? says Alan Simpson. ?That?s what you hope for?get the deficit down, get more people back to work. Hell, any good news is good news!? His struggle, he says, is to get members of Congress to worry about the 30-year threat of entitlement liabilities as much as they worried about a Greece-like collapse in 2011 or 2012. Changing the discussion to Obamacare? That?s short-term. ?If you begin to draw the line in the sand, I doubt the other folks will go along with that. There?ll be a great orgy of discussion then they?ll kick the can down the road.?

Starting Out in IM - Black Hat World

To Start Out in IM you need to be informed about some things. Here's several things that should help start you out.

This is a repost of an article. I've credited the authors below.

Some Things to Remember when Starting Out in IM

Create a Business Plan

The very first step you should take when looking to start an Internet marketing business is to develop a business plan. Within this business plan, you will be able to determine exactly what you will be selling to make money with your company. Will you be selling online marketing services or working as an affiliate by selling products or services on your websites? Knowing exactly how you plan to generate revenue will allow you to create a plan of attack for your business where you can then decide the best ways to invest your limited money.

Stick with One Type of Internet Marketing to Begin With

While there are several different Internet marketing methods, it is best if you approach one at a time so you can become an expert in that one method. By becoming an expert in one aspect of Internet marketing, you can ensure that your business is profitable when using that method to sell your products or services.

For instance, learning the ins and outs of search engine optimization before tackling pay per click advertising, email marketing and social media marketing will enable you to generate revenue from that one type of Internet marketing. Once you are able to start turning a profit, you will then be able to use the additional money your business has to invest in other types of online marketing.

Know your Market

Once you have decided what you will be selling, you will want to analyze your target market. This will make it easy for you to get your products or services in front of your target audience by figuring out where these ideal customers congregate online. Depending on the type of Internet user you are trying to market to, you may find that they use social media websites more than any other type of site on the web. If this is the case, then you will want to promote your company?s products and services on those types of sites in order to reach your target audience. This will reduce the amount of money you spend on resources promoting your business in locations where your target audience is not present.

Many people look to start an Internet marketing business in order to lead a more comfortable lifestyle by being their own boss while earning a nice income. If you would like to start your own online marketing business but do not think you have a large enough budget to do so, you will be happy to learn that it does not require a lot of money to get your own marketing business started. Creating a business plan to determine how you will generate revenue, becoming an expert in one area of Internet marketing before branching out into others and knowing the best ways to reach your target audience are some of the ways you can ensure your Internet marketing business becomes a success with a limited start up budget.

When Mars was wet: How snow melt might have carved valleys

Researchers say that 3.7 billion years ago on Mars, mountain precipitation could have carved networks of wide, shallow valleys that drop from ridges, peaks, and crater rims.

On Earth, it's a familiar scene: winds driving soggy air up the slopes of a mountain range, where the moisture condenses, and precipitation leaves those windward slopes lush with vegetation and etched with valleys and ravines.

New research suggests that some 3.7 billion years ago, valley networks on slopes on Mars ? minus the "lush" ? may have been etched by the same process.

An international team of planetary scientists has shown that precipitation triggered or enhanced by this so-called orographic lift, could have played a role in carving networks of wide, shallow valleys that drop from ridges, peaks, and crater rims on the Martian highlands.

The work aims to help unpack details about Mars' climate during a period when water filled what are now dry river beds and and when clay-based minerals were forming.

These are conditions and processes "that point to a more hospitable climate than we currently have on Mars, one that could potentially have been more amenable to life," says Kathleen Scanlon, a PhD candidate at Brown University in Providence, R.I., and the lead author of the study, which is set to be published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

It's not clear whether the precipitation the study points to would have appeared mainly as rain or snow, since estimates of temperatures on Mars at that time depend on which climate model for Mars one uses, Ms. Scanlon notes.

For this study, the team, which included colleagues from Brown as well as scientists from the University of Chicago and the University of Paris, used a new model that yields colder average temperatures for the period, suggesting snow. The snow would have melted during periodic warm spells to provide the flowing water to carve the valleys.

Whatever form the precipitation initially took, the study suggests that atmospheric moisture played a key role in shaping the Martian surface, in addition to any contribution groundwater or melting of subsurface ice may have contributed early in Mars' history, the researchers say.

Moreover, the study's results suggest a range of densities for the atmosphere that could shed further light on the climate at the time, a period of transition from the Nochian to the Hesperian ages. During this transition, the red planet's climate is thought to have started its shift from what some researchers suggest was a relatively warm, wet period to the chilled, dessicated climate the planet hosts today.

The valleys in question are on the order of a few hundred yards deep and a few miles across, Skanlon says. These valleys host what appear to be river beds that are up to 300 feet wide. Some of these river channels run for hundreds of miles.

The team picked land forms that dated to the Nochian-Hesperian transition because earlier features would have been heavily eroded and so harder to interpret, while later features might have been tough to distinguish from valleys cut by the melt of ice on the slopes of erupting volcanoes. The solar system's largest mountain, the volcano Olympus Mons, is thought to have formed during the Hesperian age.

The team identified four regions laced with networks of shallow valleys and river beds. Using a global climate model for Mars, they estimated broad wind patterns at the time, then fed those winds, along with the topographical data, into a smaller-scale model designed to study precipitation and orographic lift. They found that the model's most intense precipitation for the valley networks corresponded with the bunched, upslope areas where the networks originated. These networks and their areas of origin appear in images taken during NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter missions.

One of those valley networks, Warrego Valles, also became a testing ground for estimating the Martian atmosphere's density back in the day.

The team presented its global model with an atmosphere at twice Earth's current sea-level pressure, or a pressure of 2 bar. Under that scenario, prevailing winds tended to be too weak and came from the wrong direction to dump precipitation in the right area to trigger the network's formation.

When the team dialed atmospheric pressure down to either 0.5 bar or 1 bar, precipitation shifted to the correct locations.

The next step is to see if the atmosphere could have held enough moisture to allow precipitation from orographic lift to play a significant role in forming the valley networks.

Other researchers have estimated the water-flow rates needed to form these networks. The next step, Scanlon says, is to see what it takes for Mars climate models to approximate the right precipitation rates over the right locations and compare the results with the estimates.

A Whiff of July Windchill (30s Arrowhead tonight - Minnesota tornado drought ...

50 F. record low for Sunday, July 28, set in 1981. We will come close.

?

Seriously Cut-Off. On the mid-afternoon visible satellite loop you can see visual evidence of an unusually deep and cold pool of air aloft, moisture streaming south into the Twin Cities in gray, showery waves. Perfectly normal - for the first week of October. Showers should begin to diminish a little around the dinner hour as the atmosphere starts to stabilize.

July Wind Chill (doing a calendar double-take)

?

Here's a horrific bit of weather trivia: July is the only month where snow hasn't been reported at an official Minnesota reporting station. The city elders don't like to share that fun nugget.

Roger Kormendy from Prior Lake writes "So for a few days our weather is being influenced by ?Canadian Air? as meteorologists around here and probably across the country refer to. My question is, do Canadian meteorologists refer to air invading from the south as ?American Air?? Great question. We could use some lukewarm American Air right now.

Forget about glancing blows of fresh air. We're talking CANADIAN OCCUPATION here; a "cut-off" low - a swirl of unusually chilly air breaking off from the main belt of westerlies. Typical for October, but late July? Not so much. I'm predicting a few 30s tonight up in Tower & Embarrass, the Twin Towns of Cold.

After a brisk, bracing, invigorating start (buying any of this weather-spin?) clouds build this afternoon. A stiff wind means only the brave & foolish will be in the water. Sunday looks sunnier; a notch milder. You'll only need 2 T-shirts instead of 4. Deep breaths.

80s return the latter half of next week - but not a 90 in sight.

?

30s Sunday Morning Minnesota Arrowhead. If skies clear and winds ease a bit temperatures will drop into the 30s over Minnesota's Arrowhead late tonight, maybe mid-30s Embarrass and Tower. Map above:?NOAA.

?

Warming Trend Next Week. No worries - think of this as a mid-summer intermission from heat and humidity. Although no searing heat is brewing anytime soon we will see a rerun of 80s by the middle of next week. The best chance of showers and T-storms: Tuesday, again Friday of next week.

?

Short-Term Chill; Longer-Term Warm Bias? In spite of the chill outside your window today some of the longer range models are showing a warm bias for autumn, continuing the recent trend of (milder)?falls across Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. In today's edition of Climate Matters we update Dorian, Flossie (which sounds like a bunny rabbit), and the implications of a buckling of the jet stream into a very strange, almost unheard-of July "cut-off" low.

Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, and four other U.S. reps -- asked President Barack Obama to issue a disaster declaration for the 18 counties in Minnesota hardest-hit by the solstice storms. Yesterday, he did. The presidential signature means that now, the feds can step in with more funds to help clean-up and rebuild infrastructure and public property. Preliminary assessments peg the tab for recovery at $17.8 million, a good $10 million higher than initial estimates..."

Unusual Tornado On July 22. I thought this was especially interesting, an excerpt of Dr. Mark Seeley's always-excellent WeatherTalk Newsletter: "The NOAA-National Weather Service Grand Forks Office reported on an unusual tornado earlier this week that struck between Mahnomen and Zerkel (Mahnomen County). This storm was unusual in several aspects: firstly it struck between 1:50 AM and 2:30 AM on July 22nd (Monday), a very rare time of day for tornadoes in our region (less than 2 percent of all tornadoes occur at that time of day); second, wind speeds were estimated to range from 110-120 mph (EF-2 strength), unusually strong for an overnight storm; thirdly, the storm path was nearly 18 miles in length (though intermittently on the ground), a relatively long storm path for an overnight storm. Thankfully this tornado did not cause any deaths or injuries, but it did damage a home, a number of farm structures, along with some farm equipment. It also caused a good deal of tree damage, especially around Roy Lake. This was the 6th confirmed tornado of the year so far in Minnesota. You can read more about the 2013 tornado season in Minnesota at the MN State Climatology Office web site.....http://www.climate.umn.edu/doc/journal/Tornado2013.htm

Map above:?SPC reports only 6 tornadoes in Minnesota so far in 2013.

Alerts Broadcaster Briefing, issued midday Friday:

?

Here's what we're monitoring:

* Tropical Storm Dorian has weakened over the last 24 hours, packing 50 mph sustained winds. It's running into drier air with increasing wind shear, preventing the storm from strengthening to hurricane status for at least the next 4-5 days as it pushes toward Cuba.

* Tropical Storm Flossie expected to weaken into a tropical depression before drifting over Hawaii; capable of torrential rains and significant flooding by Tuesday of next week.

?

Dorian: An Unimpressive Tropical Storm. A combination of dry air becoming entrained in its circulation and increasing wind shear is causing Dorian to weaken, a trend which is expected to continue into the weekend, in fact Dorian may lose tropical storm strength. That doesn't mean we can discount the storm altogether. Wind shear is forecast to weaken slightly as it approaches the Caribbean, and with the storm moving into an area of warmer sea surface temperatures some strengthening is still possible next week.

?

Latest Numbers. T.S. Dorian is moving briskly toward the west-northewst, on a track which should still take the storm north of St. Martin, The U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Sunday. Heavy rain squalls are possible from St. John to San Juan, but the core of the storm should stay 50-150 miles north of the islands. More serious flooding is possible Monday and Tuesday as the storm brushes Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

?

Short-Term Track: High Confidence. The models are (amazingly) aligned, showing the track of Dorian over the next 5 days, posing the greatest risk to the southern Bahamas and Cuba in a Monday-Tuesday time frame next week.

?

Long-Term Track: Low Confidence. After pushing near Cuba by Monday or Tuesday, the models are (literally) all over the map with where Dorian may go next. An increasing number of solutions take Dorian into the Gulf of Mexico, which would probably be the most threatening solution for the U.S. Water temperatures are unusually warm in the Gulf, and Dorian might strengthen significantly if it takes a more southerly rouute. Just as many models veer the storm to the north, possibly soaking Florida with heavy rains the middle or end of next week before pushing out into the Atlantic. Confidence levels are still very low regarding the long-term path of Dorian, and even whether this storm poses a significant risk to facilities in the U.S.

?

Sputtering Along. The combination of dry air and wind shear will probably conspire to keep Dorian a modest tropical storm, at least looking out 120 hours. A few of the models even weaken Dorian to a tropical depression or tropical wave beyond 60 hours, a scenario which is very believable looking at the data.

?

Timing Dorian. Based on guidance from NOAA NHC Monday looks like the wettest day for Puerto Rico; minor flooding can't be ruled out, but right now this does not look like a significant/deadly storm scenario. More serious flooding is possible from The Domincan Republic to Cuba and the Bahamas by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

?

A Hawaiian Soaking. Tropical Storm Flossie is expected to weaken as it pushes westward across the Pacific, reaching tropical depression strength before impacting the Hawaiian Islands in a Tuesday-Wednesday timeframe next week. Soaking/flooding rains and subsequent flash flooding can't be ruled out in Honolulu by the middle of next week.

Summary: our goal is to set expectations, and although Dorian is fairly unimpressive (today) we need to continue to collectively monitor this storm, and possible implications for the U.S. Florida stands the best chance of soaking rains from Dorian by the middle of next week; a solution that brings Dorian into the Gulf of Mexico could threaten much of the Gulf Coast with a much more significant storm or possible hurricane. Again, it's too early to make a long-term determination of impacts or possible U.S. landfall at this time. Flossie will probably spark considerable flash flooding over Hawaii by Tuesday-Wednesday of next week. I'm tempted to get on a plane and personally coordinate preparation efforts on Waikiki Beach, but - alas - there's a high probability that won't happen. I'll keep you in the loop with updates - hopefully Dorian's long-term track will emerge from the meteorological noise within the next 48-72 hours.

The finding, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, is not expected to change screening recommendations and shouldn?t alarm those with a tall stature. The answer didn't surprise me too much, come to think of it. Slate has the cautionary tale - here's an excerpt : "...Still, the Allstate report is both a useful indicator and a good way to winnow down the candidates. We can safely assume that the city with the worst drivers is somewhere in Allstate?s bottom 50. Phoenix, Indianapolis, and Denver, therefore, are off the hook, along with a raft of others. One notable escapee is San Diego, the city with the most drunk driving arrests. Let?s also ignore cities with populations below 150,000, because data on those places is limited. Plus, few people have ever said, ?Hayward, California has the worst drivers!? We?ll add Boston back into the mix, based on opinion surveys. (You?re not getting off that easy, Boston.) That leaves 39 candidates..."

"Quickboat" Foldable Boat: From Roof Rack To?Water In 60 Seconds. If towing a boat is just too much trouble, now you can unfold one??I'm almost afraid to see what comes next. Gizmag.com has the details: "Think it takes more time to build a boat than make a French omelette? Think again. The Quickboat is the first foldable boat we've seen that a team of two can put together in a minute or less. That's insanely fast compared to the build times of other foldable boats we've covered, such as the Transporter (10 minutes) and the Smartkat (20 minutes). In fact, the boat is so easy to construct says Deryck Graham, the Managing Director of Australian company Quickboats, that one person with a beer in hand could assemble the boat in three minutes even with friends around to distract them..."

Meteorologists Reporting Sky Just A Little Bit Bluer Today, And It's Because Minneapolis Resident Doug Bramowski's In Love. A headline like this could only come from one authoritative source: The Onion. Details:?"The National Weather Service is reporting that the clouds over Minneapolis have parted, the sun is shining, and the sky is just a little bluer today?and it?s all because 38-year-old Doug Bramowski is in love, folks. NWS meteorologists predict that since Bramowski?s head over heels for Abby Feldman and, by golly, she?s crazy about him, too, Twin Cities residents will be enjoying particularly beautiful weather this weekend with highs in the mid-to-upper 70s, unusually low humidity, and crystal-clear skies as far as the eye can see..."

Climate Stories...

?

Global Warming And The Future Of Storms. The Guardian has the story, co-authored by St. Thomas climate scientist John Abraham. Here's an excerpt:?"...I asked Dr. Emanuel to summarize the present understanding of hurricanes, and he responded with the following insights:

? The incidence of high-intensity tropical cyclones (Safir-Simpson categories 3-5) should increase, and the amount of rainfall in these storms should increase, upping the potential for freshwater flooding. These changes will not necessarily occur where tropical cyclones develop and thrive today. "Indeed," wrote Emanuel, "it is likely that there will be decreasing activity in some places, and increasing activity in others; models do not agree on such regional changes."

? Though experts disagree on this point, Emanuel's work suggests that weak events (tropical storms and Cat 1-2 storms) will become more frequent.

? "Very little work has been done on the problem of storm size," wrote Emanuel, "what little research has been done suggests that storm diameters may increase with global temperature. This can have a profound influence on storm surges, which are the biggest killers in tropical cyclone disasters..."

Desert Storm: Battle Brews Over Obama Renewable Energy Plan. National Geographic Daily News has the story; here's the introduction: "America's deserts are stark, quiet places, where isolation and the elements have long kept development at bay. To outsiders, these arid expanses may not seem like prized land. But they?are poised to play a key role?and perhaps, to serve as a battleground?in President?Obama's plan to?double U.S. electricity from wind, solar, and geothermal sources by 2020. To help ramp up that amount of clean energy, the White House has urged approval of an additional 10,000 megawatts of renewable energy production on public lands. Estimates vary on exactly how many households would be served by the?expansion, but?the Obama Administration says the 25 utility-scale solar facilities, nine wind farms, and 11 geothermal plants it has approved on federal?lands so far will provide enough juice to power 4.4 million homes. One thing is for certain: The new drive for large-scale solar will require land..."

Fossil Fuels To Dominate World Energy Use Through 2040. Meteorologist Andrew Freedman has the story at Climate Central; here's an excerpt: "Global energy consumption will grow by 56 percent by 2040 with fossil fuels remaining dominant energy sources. Along with that growth will come increased carbon dioxide emissions and a continued reliance on ?coal, oil, and natural gas for transportation and electricity generation, according to a new report published Thursday by the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The International Energy Outlook, which is released every two years, shows that strong economic growth in developing countries will be the dominant force driving world energy markets during that period. ?Rising prosperity in China and India is a major factor in the outlook for global energy demand. These two countries combined account for half the world?s total increase in energy use through 2040,? said EIA administrator Adam Sieminski in a press release. The EIA is the Department of Energy?s statistical and analytical agency..."

Former CIA Director:?Fixing The U.S. Energy Strategy. Here's a clip of an interesting Op-ed at livescience.com: "...The key to reducing the political and economic cloud of questionable fuel-vending nations is to reduce overall demand - and, thus, the market price and profits - for oil. While we can't take millions of conventional-fuel vehicles out of the U.S. fleet overnight, there may be cheap and effective ways to accelerate the use of alternative fuels and increase energy independence. In particular, Woolsey believes in the potential for a market for ethanol and methanol derived from U.S. natural gas. With the current price of natural gas sitting around one-fifth that of oil, developing methanol-based fuels to add them as a choice at the pump could potentially take enough demand away from oil to drive prices down to $60 per barrel or less....

Mohave Mirrors: World's Largest Solar Energy Ready To Shine. National Geographic has the story; here's the intro: "More than six years in the making, the Ivanpah plant is now slated to begin generating power before summer's end. It?was designed by BrightSource Energy to use more than 170,000 mirrors to focus sunlight onto boilers positioned atop three towers, which reach nearly 500 feet (150 meters) into the dry desert air. The reflected sunlight heats water in the boilers to make steam, which turns turbines to generate electricity?enough?to power more than 140,000 homes.."

Buffet Says Coal's Decline In U.S. To Be Gradual But Permanent. Bloomberg Businessweek has the story; here's the introduction:?"Coal use in the U.S. will continue to fall though the slide will be gradual as electric utilities switch to cleaner alternatives over ?years and years,? billionaire Warren Buffett said at an event in Indiana this week. ?Coal will gradually decline in importance, and of course when natural gas prices get low enough you have a big switch over,? Buffett said July 22, according to a recording posted online by WFYI, a public radio station in Indianapolis. ?Coal plants are producing about 38 percent of all the electricity in the United States now,? Buffett said. ?You can?t scrap that. That takes years and years and years to replace. It will be happening gradually...?

Fix Up Your House With These Home Improvement Tips ...

TIP! You can take a big bite out of the cost of a kitchen remodeling project by opting to give your existing cabinets a new finish, instead of buying all-new cabinetry. You can use some paint on the base and add new finishing knobs to really update the look.

No matter what you?re attempting to do in life, knowing how to do it is a great point from which to start. This is certainly true of home improvement. You surely do not want to improve your home in such a way to your roof leaks or your basement stairs are hazardous. The following tips will give you the knowledge you need to get started in home improvement.

TIP! Store material that you?re using for building between floor joists or ceiling rafters. It is fairly easy to store a lengthy piece of molding or even a two by four in this fashion.

Having the right tools is essential when you are doing renovations. If you have the right equipment you will ensure you do a good job and it is simple to do. Knowing how to use those tools is just as important as having the right tools.

TIP! The addition of a bathroom to the home can increase the value of your home. Having additional bathrooms is terrific, particularly if it is on a different floor from the existing ones.

It?s very easy to dress pillows for a teenager?s room. Use old clothes that aren?t being worn anymore, including band shirts, old jeans, and cool shirts, and cut and sew the pieces together so that they can fit onto the pillows. This will enhance their room with a bit more flavor and personality.

TIP! Ask a reputable professional to help you inspect the condition of your existing floors before you decide to lay down all new hardwood. Sometimes you may have beautiful, natural hardwood hiding underneath layers of carpet or linoleum that is just waiting to be refinished.

Use baby food jars for organizing your office. You can screw or superglue the jar lids under the wall shelf. Small things like nails and screws, beads or jewelry making supplies can be stored in these jars. Once you do this, twist these jars into place underneath your shelf. This saves you a ton of counter space.

TIP! Do not demolish too much when you start your home improvement task. You have to be able to see what you are tearing down before you remove something.

Be cautious when choosing a drain cleaner for your most stubborn clogs. Cleaners can differ a great deal, and many of them are quite harsh. Crystallized cleaners can stick to the pipes and corrode them. If you have a septic tank, you have to pick a drain cleaner approved for that use.

TIP! If you want to free up the space on your tables and nightstands, try buying a floor lamp to replace your table lamps. The floor lamps can be moved to different areas of the room because they are free standing.

There are lots of various dangers to be wary of when taking on a home improvement project. Don?t buy drywall (also known as wall board or sheet rock) that was made in China. In 2005, there was a drastic increase in the amount of drywall imported from China by US builders. The biggest problem with it is that the quality control standards are virtually nonexistent, so the weak product simply fails to hold up. There have been extreme situations in which the drywall has released harmful gases that have a drastic, negative impact on wiring in walls.

TIP! Take a good look at your porch when considering improvements. Anyone who drives up to your home is going to see the porch first.

Start thinking about, and planning for, your home improvement project early in the game. There are a million different things you can do to your living space if you just look in the right places. Removing the rush to find just the right color scheme will reduce the stress of your renovation.

TIP! When painting your home, whether just a wall or your entire home, first you have to know how much paint is needed. Make an accurate estimate based on measurements; if you guess, you may spend too much on paint.

Don?t forget to put sealant over your grout after laying new tile work. Grout is not waterproof on its own, but porous instead. Without sealing grout, moisture can creep in, creating mildew and mold. If left unsealed, you will notice your grout discolors quickly from stains. Not only is sealed grout easier to clean and more attractive, it may save you a lot of money by preventing expensive-to-repair mildew issues.

TIP! ?Age-in-place? home improvements should be a major priority when it comes to home improvement. This concept helps you to cope within the home as you are going to get older as time passes.

In most cases, home improvements are easy enough for almost anyone to take care of. However, it is still important to proceed with caution and research any repair you plan before you begin. This article should have helped you understand that a little know-how goes a long way. Best of luck to you with your home improvement projects!

World energy consumption won't slow down

According to U.S. Energy Information Administration, world energy consumption is projected to increase by 56 percent over the next three decades.

The E.I.A.?s International Energy Outlook 2013, released July 25, presents updated projections for world energy markets through 2040. It says that global energy demand would increase due to prosperity in China and India. Half of the total world increase in energy consumption is attributed to China and India.

?These two countries combined account for half the world?s total increase in energy use through 2040,? said EIA Administrator Adam Sieminski. ?This will have a profound effect on the development of world energy markets.?

Clean-fuel technology is also playing an important role in the outlook, with renewable energy and nuclear power expected to grow faster than fossil fuels over the forecast period.

Other key findings:

? World energy consumption increases from 524 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in 2010 to 820 quadrillion Btu in 2040. The increase in world energy use is largely in the developing world, where growth is driven by strong, long-term economic growth.

? World consumption of energy from all fuel sources through 2040 would increase: Fossil fuels are expected to continue supplying much of the energy used worldwide. Renewable energy and nuclear power are the world?s fastest-growing energy sources, each increasing by 2.5 percent per year; however, fossil fuels continue to supply almost 80 percent of world energy use through 2040.

? Natural gas is the fastest growing fossil fuel in the outlook. Global natural gas consumption grows by 1.7 percent per year. Increasing supplies of tight gas, shale gas and coalbed methane support growth in projected worldwide gas use. Coal grows faster than liquid fuels consumption until after 2030, due to increases in China?s consumption of coal and tepid growth in liquid fuels demand attributed to (1) slow growth in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries, and (2) high sustained oil prices.

Ford engineer builds vibrating shift knob using 3D printer and an Xbox 360 controller (video)

Ford engineer builds a vibrating shift knob with a 3D printer and an Xbox 360 controller

You're not going to find it in the next car you drive off the lot, but a Ford engineer has developed a fairly novel approach to making a manual transmission a bit easier to adjust to: a vibrating shifter knob. As he explains in the video after the break, Zach Nelson first turned to an Xbox 360 controller for the necessary vibrating mechanism, which he then stuffed into a 3D-printed knob along with an Arduino controller and an LED display.

When fully assembled, the knob is able to communicate with the vehicle's on-board diagnostic system using Ford's open source OpenXC software platform, and vibrate to let you know when you need to shift gears. As Wired notes, the knob can even be used by more experienced drivers to pinpoint exactly when to shift to get either the most performance or the best fuel economy. We also expect a booming business in custom shifter designs to start any minute now.

Miss Universe Canada gets set for Bollywood

It's almost a tradition for Miss Indias to transition into Bollywood, and international beauty queens, too, are now following the same path. After Miss Sri Lanka Jacqueline Fernandez, it's Miss Universe Canada 2012 Sahar Biniaz, who is preparing to make Bollywood her home. She had turned quite a few heads among industry folks during TOIFA in Vancouver this year.

But, Sahar isn't just a pretty face. She has a full scholarship to the New York Film Academy and an honouree award for her humanitarian work with Operation Smile. She has done acting assignments in the West, including guest star roles on TV shows Sanctuary and Smallville. She was also the lead in the international film Ambrosia.
But, India, her birthplace, is where she always saw herself. She says, "I've watched Bollywood films and always felt that part of my soul belonged here." She is now preparing to enter the industry armed with her exotic looks and charm. Adds Sahar, "I've been offered a few projects, but I'm very selective. I want to choose a character that can affect the audience."

She speaks English, Spanish and Farsi and is learning Hindi. She is also practising Bollywood dance and counts Madhuri Dixit among her inspirations. "I'm blown away by Indian women, especially those from the industry, like Ekta Kapoor and Pooja Bhatt," she says.
