Announced yesterday, the device made an appearance on the IFA show room floor this week, boasting a big and bright 4.7-inch IPS display that makes the its brethren looking downright shrimpy by comparison. In spite of the display size, the phone feels light, with a 8.9-millimeter profile.
It's important to note here that, in spite of being the king of the L-Series, it's still part of a budget lineup, and as such, the phone's body feels a bit plastickey, and the textured rear had a bit of trouble staying snapped in place in the two models (black and white) that we played with. Specwise, we're talking a 1GHz dual-core processor,1GB of RAM inside, 4GB of storage (expandable via a microSD slot and a 2,150mAh battery. The handset's rocking Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.4, to be precise).
The handset's got a fairly nice bezel, with the front-facing camera on the top and a home button on the bottom, flanked by illuminating back and menu touch buttons. Unemployment: Extended claims fall slightly
Unemployment claims report for this week indicated that? 'initial'? unemployment claims went flat at 374,000.? while? 'continued' claims declined by 5,000, resulting in an 'insured' unemployment rate of 2.6 percent.
This chart shows the weekly number of initial and continued unemployment claims over the past decade three years. Both figures have declined steadily since peaking in 2009, though initial claims had a slight bump in recent months. Initial claims went flat this week, while continued claims dropped.

Taken together with the latest 3.16 million people that are currently counted as receiving traditional continued unemployment benefits, there are 5.44 million people on state and federal unemployment rolls.

U.S. Embraces Arms Control by Social Media
The U.S. State Department is now banking on the possibility that the rise of social media may offer a new means of monitoring for arms-control violations. Imagine an army of sensors made up of ordinary citizens willing, in theory, to keep their governments in check and prove they aren't violating arms-control treaties. That's the concept behind the State Department's "innovation in arms control challenge," a contest that will offer a cash prize of $10,000 to the best idea, or ideas, for using social media to spot arms-control violators.
The contest, which the State Department is set to announce today, is the brainchild of Rose Gottemoeller, a State Department official known lately as much for her embrace of social media as for her longtime expertise in arms control.
Gottemoeller, the acting undersecretary for arms control and international security, told Popular Mechanics in an interview that the department will be open to any approach, but she suggested some possible apps. For example: something that mines social media data, such as Twitter feeds, to spot evidence of a banned chemical weapons stockpile or an undeclared missile plant. Or, perhaps compiling data from tens or even hundreds of thousands of iPads, which are equipped with accelerometers that could be used to monitor for ground tremors to detect a possible nuclear event.
Those who follow social media and data mining expressed enthusiasm about the State Department's challenge while also pointing out some of the unique difficulties such an application could pose. Social media can prove a boon for uncovering intelligence, but it has to be monitored and analyzed by experts in the context of other sources of intelligence, says Gareth Ham, the head of insights at Brandwatch, a U.K.-based firm that performs social media monitoring. "We can't simply hold a finger in the air of social networking and obtain noteworthy findings," he says.
The State Department will not have been the first agency to make forays into the world of social media exploitation; Gottemoeller says she was inspired by the red balloon contest the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency sponsored in 2009. That contest, which was also designed to leverage information gathering via social networks, offered a $40,000 cash prize to the first team to spot 10 red weather balloons released across the continental United States. A team at MIT won the contest in less than 9 hours through a clever system that rewarded not only those who spotted the balloons, but also those who recruited other people who spotted balloons.
But finding a model for sniffing out clandestine weapons of mass destruction will no doubt be more difficult than spotting a series of brightly colored balloons. MIT won the red balloon challenge by using incentives to increase trust and transparency, MIT research scientist Peter Gloor says. Applying such a model to arms control means finding a way to motivate citizens to report potential violations, and to weed out imposters. "It will be very hard to know if somebody who tweets about a violation is who he claims to be," he says.
Privacy is another issue. "[I]f a whistleblower would self-identify and would report a violation on a reportedly secure website, how can they know that North Korea did not break in and will find out their identity?" Gloor says.
The idea of having private citizens looking for clues of weapons of mass destruction is a major departure from years past, according Gottemoeller, when verification and monitoring was done either through "national technical means," meaning large satellite systems or on-site inspections. And while the idea of using private citizens to spot signs of illicit weapons may conjure images of espionage, Gottemoeller says she is thinking about countries that have made a commitment to disarm and thus are interested in openness.
"We are thinking ahead about a time when governments would find it in their interest to work in partnership with their public to make this case [for disarmament]," she says.
Gottemoeller also points out that the idea of having citizens monitor arms control actually extends back to physicist and nuclear activist Joseph Rotblat, who founded the Pugwash peace movement. Rotblat, according to Gottemoeller, also talked about devising a notion for societal verification of arms control for countries that wanted to prove they had fully eliminated nuclear weapons.
Of course, Rotblat's ideas preceded the rise of smartphones and tablets by half a century.
"In the 1950s, this was a blue-sky idea," Gottemoeller says. "Now with the tools of the information age, we can begin to bring that blue-sky idea into the practical realm."

Virgin in court bid to keep rail franchise
LONDON (AP) ? Virgin Trains says it will go to court in its campaign to hold onto the west coast rail franchise between London and Scotland.
Virgin, which announced the action on Tuesday, lost out to rival FirstGroup in bidding for a new 13-year franchise to run the line. Virgin boss Richard Branson had called the decision "insane" and questioned whether FirstGroup could meet its financial commitments.The Department for Transport had expected to sign a contract with FirstGroup this week.
FirstGroup responded that the bidding process had been fair. It said, "There has been no complaint about the process, which was carefully described in advance, until Virgin Rail Group had lost commercially."

Links between nutrients, genes and cancer spread documented
ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? More than 40 plant-based compounds can turn on genes that slow the spread of cancer, according to a first-of-its-kind study by a Washington State University researcher.
Gary Meadows, WSU professor and associate dean for graduate education and scholarship in the College of Pharmacy, says he is encouraged by his findings because the spread of cancer is most often what makes the disease fatal. Moreover, says Meadows, diet, nutrients and plant-based chemicals appear to be opening many avenues of attack.
"We're always looking for a magic bullet," he says. "Well, there are lots of magic bullets out there in what we eat and associated with our lifestyle. We just need to take advantage of those. And they can work together."
Meadows started the study, recently published online in the journal Cancer and Metastasis Reviews, with some simple logic: Most research focuses on the prevention of cancer or the treatment of the original cancer tumor, but it's usually the cancer's spread to nearby organs that kills you. So rather than attack the tumor, said Meadows, let's control its spread, or metastasis.
He focused in particular on genes that suppress metastasis. As search engine terms go, it took him down many a wormhole in the PubMed research database, as the concept of nutrients and metastasis suppressor genes is rarely identified by journals. It's even an afterthought of some of the researchers who find the genes.
"People for the most part did not set out in their research goals to study metastasis suppressor genes," says Meadows. "It was just a gene that was among many other genes that they had looked at in their study."
But Meadows took the studies and looked to see when metastasis suppressor genes were on or off, even if original authors didn't make the connection. In the end, he documented dozens of substances affecting the metastasis suppressor genes of numerous cancers.
He saw substances like amino acids, vitamin D, ethanol, ginseng extract, the tomato carotenoid lycopene, the turmeric component curcumin, pomegranate juice, fish oil and others affecting gene expression in breast, colorectal, prostate, skin, lung and other cancers.
Typically, the substances acted epigenetically, which is to say they turned metastasis suppressor genes on or off.
"So these epigenetic mechanisms are influenced by what you eat," he says. "That may also be related to how the metastasis suppressor genes are being regulated. That's a very new area of research that has largely not been very well explored in terms of diet and nutrition."
Meadows says his study reinforces two concepts.
For one, he has a greater appreciation of the role of natural compounds in helping our bodies slow or stop the spread of cancer. The number of studies connecting nutrients and metastasis suppressor genes by accident suggests a need for more deliberate research into the genes.
"And many of these effects have not been followed up on," he says. "There's likely to be more compounds out there, more constituents, that people haven't even evaluated yet."
Meadows also sees these studies playing an important role in the shift from preventing cancer to living with it and keeping it from spreading.
"We've kind of focused on the cancer for a long time," he says. "More recently we've started to focus on the cancer in its environment. And the environment, your whole body as an environment, is really important in whether or not that cancer will spread."

Car runs down NH memorial ride cyclists, killing 2
WESTMORELAND, N.H. (AP) ? Police say an 87-year-old driver crossed the center lane of traffic and struck a bevy of motorcyclists participating in a New Hampshire memorial ride, killing two of them. Six other people were hurt.
Police say as many as 200 motorcycles were riding on Route 12 on Saturday morning in Westmoreland when a car driven by Walpole resident Robert Lockerby swerved into their lane.
Killed were 59-year-old Gary Champney, of Alstead, and 41-year-old Aaron Robar, of Newport. Five other motorcyclists and Lockerby's 87-year-old wife were hurt. Two were airlifted to hospitals.
Police say neither speed nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.
The ride was in honor of Army Spc. Justin Rollins, a Newport native who was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb in March 2007.

Only two percent of Canadians deny climate change
ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Only two per cent of Canadians believe climate change is not occurring, a new important survey released August 24 by IPAC-CO2 Research Inc. concluded.
The survey comes on the heels of Alberta Premier Alison Redford's recent push for a National Energy Strategy, which would address the future of Canada's oil and gas industries, and its approach to carbon management.
"Our survey indicates that Canadians from coast to coast overwhelmingly believe climate change is real and is occurring, at least in part due to human activity" explained Dr. Carmen Dybwad, CEO of the environmental non-government organization said. "These findings have been consistent from 2011 and 2012. Canadians care about issues like extreme weather, drought and climate change."
Opinions about the cause of climate change and how to combat it are, however, sharply divided among the provinces.
"Canadians most commonly (54%) believe that climate change is occurring partially due to human activity and partially due to natural climate variation," said Briana Brownell of Insightrix Research, who conducted the survey for IPAC-CO2.
"Residents of Quebec (44 %), Atlantic Canada (34%) and British Columbia (32 %) are more likely to believe climate change is occurring due to human activity than those on the Prairies (Alberta and Saskatchewan 21 %, Manitoba 24 %)."
Canadians are also divided on what they believe should be the priorities to fight climate change.
A total of 35 % of Canadians believe the priority should be to promote cleaner cars running on electricity or low-carbon fuels while only 16 % favored a tax on carbon dioxide emissions from the whole economy. Support for a carbon tax is lowest in B.C. (6%) and highest in Quebec (24%).
A key solution cited by Canadians is Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS, which involves capturing carbon dioxide from an industrial source of greenhouse gases, transporting it, and storing it deep in the Earth's subsurface.
A majority of Canadians agree that capturing and storing carbon dioxide should be compulsory when building a new coal (59%) or natural gas (57%) power plant, though Canadians are concerned about the risks associated with CCS.
Quebec residents (71 %) would be concerned if carbon dioxide was stored underground within 1.5 kilometres to 3 kilometres from their home, while Saskatchewan residents (43%) were the least worried.
Residents of B.C. (60%) are most likely to believe that the storage of carbon dioxide represents a safety risk in the future. Again, Saskatchewan residents (48%) are significantly less likely to hold this belief.
"CCS is not the "magic bullet" solution to combat climate change, but the development of CCS technology represents a necessary step in reducing Canada's emissions," said Dr. Dybwad.
For a second consecutive year, IPAC-CO2 contracted Insightrix Research, Inc. to conduct an online survey of Canadian residents. Survey responses were collected from 1,550 Canadians between May 29 and June 11.
The percentage of Canadians who are unsure whether or not they would benefit from CCS has increased notably from 42% in 2011 to 48% in 2012.
Residents of Ontario are more likely to believe that it would (33%) benefit them, while in Quebec the reverse is true, where 30% believe they would not benefit from the technology.
The proportion of Canadians who are unsure of the effectiveness of carbon capture and storage has increased notably from one quarter (24%) in 2011 to one third (35%) in 2012.
Despite the concerns many Canadians have about the technology, Dr. Dybwad remains optimistic about the future of CCS and its impact on Canada's environment.
"Canadians are concerned about the risks and benefits involved with CCS, but IPAC-CO2 exists to ensure that carbon dioxide is stored safely and permanently in the ground by providing risk and performance assessments of carbon dioxide storage projects."

Sea Dragon Energy announces second quarter 2012 results
CALGARY, Aug. 23, 2012 /CNW/ - Sea Dragon Energy Inc. ("Sea Dragon" or the "Company") (TSXV: SDX) is pleased to announce its 2012 second quarter financial and operating results (the "Quarter").??All dollar values are expressed in United States dollars unless otherwise stated.
Highlights:
- Achieved an average production rate of 1,147 bopd as compared to 1,094 bopd in the second quarter of 2011;
- Funds flow from operations for the Quarter of ($0.2) million compared to $0.4 million in the first quarter of 2012 and $0.9 million in the second quarter of 2011, mostly due to some payment delays reflected in increased working capital needs, which was offset subsequent to the Quarter end as indicated below; Net loss for the Quarter was ($1.4) million compared to ($0.8) million in the first quarter of 2012 and ($0.1) million in the second quarter of 2011.
- Operating costs for the Quarter were $8.36/bbl compared to $13.64/bbl in the first quarter of 2012 and $10.63/bbl in the second quarter of 2011.
- Generated netbacks of $39.25/bbl in the Quarter, compared to $41.93/bbl in the first quarter of 2012 and $38.68/bbl in the second quarter of 2011.
- Exited the Quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $7.2 million and working capital of $7.1 million, and $7.4 million of debt;
Subsequent:
- Subsequent to Quarter end the Company collected $3.0 million in outstanding accounts receivable. This is a substantial improvement over the first quarter of 2012.

Operations:
NORTH WEST GEMSA CONCESSION
During the second quarter of 2012, Sea Dragon participated in the drilling of one well (0.1 net) in the NW Gemsa Concession and completion of one additional well. The AASE-11 ST-1 development well was completed and placed on production.? During the quarter, the AASE-12 well was drilled, completed and placed on production.? Water injection in Al Amir SE is ongoing, with three injection wells at Al Amir SE-7 and Al Amir SE-8 and Al Amir-10. In the Geyad field injection is provided by the Geyad-5 well.
The NW Gemsa block is located in the Eastern Desert on the southwest part of the Gulf of Suez and comprises 4 fields: the Al Amir field (undeveloped heavy oil field), the Al Amir SE field, the Geyad field and the Al Ola field.? Current production from the concession is running steady at around 9100 bopd gross of light crude oil (42 API) (910 bopd net to the Company). Cumulative oil production is 8.87 MMbbl gross (7.37 MMbbl from Al Amir/Al Ola and 1.50 MMbbl from Geyad).? Sea Dragon has a 10% working interest in the Concession.
NW Gemsa is producing from the Shagar and Rahmi sands of the Kareem formation.? Potential for additional oil has also been demonstrated in the Belayim, South Gharib, and Lower Rudeis Formations.
Al Amir SE Field
Currently, 10 productive wells and 3 injectors exist at Al Amir SE. Water is being injected in? Al Amir SE-7 and Al Amir SE-8 and Al Amir SE-10 injectors? at a rate of over 18,000 bwpd.
AASE-12 ST-1 Well:
This development well, located in the south eastern area of the field, was spud April 25, 2012. The primary objective was to produce oil from the Shagar and Rahmi reservoirs and appraise the shallower South Gharib and Belayim reservoirs.
The well was drilled to a total depth of 10,200 feet and was subsequently sidetracked to the northeast. The sidetrack was successfully drilled to a final total depth of 10,315 feet, encountering 15.5 feet of oil pay in the Shagar sand.
The Shagar sand was perforated in the interval 9,669 to 9,684.5 feet and flowed oil and gas on test at an average rate of 2,595 bopd and 4.7mmscf/d respectively, on a 48/64" choke. The well has now been placed on production at an initial flow rate of 1,038 bopd.
AASE-11 ST-1 Well:
This development well encountered 42 feet of oil pay in the Shagar reservoir and 22 feet in the Rahmi. The well was successfully completed in the Shagar reservoir in the interval 10,730 feet to 10,780 feet and placed on a production test on April 24, 2012. The well flowed at a maximum rate of 3,500 bopd on a one inch choke. The well was placed on production at a rate of 1,635 bopd on a half inch choke.
The well experienced increased water cuts shortly into its productive life.? A review is ongoing in order to assess the water source and a means of water shut-off.
Geyad Field
Currently there are 3 productive wells and 1 water injector well in the Geyad field.? Water is being injected in the Geyad-5 at a total rate of 4,000 bwpd, in both the Shagar and Rahmi zones.
North West Gemsa Operations subsequent to the Quarter:
Al Ola-3 Well:
This injection well, located in the southern part of Al Amir SE field known as the Al Ola development lease, was spud on July 16, 2012. The primary objective of the well is to provide injection support to the Kareem sands in Al Ola area of the field. The Shagar and Rahmi sands were cored and the well was drilled? to a total depth of 10,550 ft.? The well is currently being logged.
KOM OMBO CONCESSION
During the second quarter of 2012 the Company participated in the drilling of 2 wells (net 1.0), West AB-2 and AB-16.? During the quarter the company also participated in the recompletion of AB-11.
The Company's 2012 drilling program was launched in March 2012. The first exploration well, WAB-2, discovered oil in the shallow Abu Ballas Reservoir. The AB-16 development well, targeting the deeper Kom Ombo Sands, discovered oil in the Kom Ombo C and was placed on production.? Additionally, the AB-11 well was worked over and recompleted in the Six Hills "F1" and resumed production.
This concession is located onshore in the southern part of Egypt some 1,000 km south of Cairo. It contains the Al Baraka oilfield, producing light oil from multiple reservoirs and an exploration area of 11,400 km?.? Sea Dragon has a 50% working interest in the Concession.
Production from the Al Baraka field is averaging approximately 575 bopd (287 bopd net to Sea Dragon).
West Al Baraka-2 Well:
The West Al Baraka-2 (WAB-2) exploratory well discovered oil in the shallow Abu Ballas Formation. The West Al Baraka structure, the second discovery on the Concession, is located 9 km to the southwest of the Al Baraka producing oil field.
The Abu Ballas reservoir was selectively perforated in the interval 2,085-2,164 feet and successfully fraced.? During clean up the well tested 170 bopd.? The well is currently shut in pending declaration of commerciality and preparation of a Development Lease application before being placed on production.
Al Baraka 16 Well (AB-16):
This development well was spud on April 30, 2012. The objective of AB-16 was to appraise the deeper Kom Ombo "sands".? AB-16 was successfully drilled to a total depth of 7,590 feet in the Basement.
The well is located on Al Baraka development lease on a separate fault block, immediately southwest from the main Al Baraka field and 6 km up dip from the AB SE-1 well.? The well encountered oil shows in the Six Hills F1, Kom Ombo "C "and Kom Ombo "A " sands.
Cores were cut in the Six Hills F1 Kom Ombo "A" and "B".? Core analysis and petrophysical analysis indicate the well discovered 18 ft of oil pay in the Six Hills F1 and 60 ft in the Kom Ombo C and 4 ft in the Kom Ombo A.
The Kom Ombo "C" was selectively perforated in the interval 6,610-6,767 ft and tested? with Nitrogen lift at a rate of up to 530 bopd with a 11% water cut.?? Upon placing the well on production the daily oil rates declined sharply, and water cut increased significantly.? Reasons for the decline are being investigated.
Al Baraka 11 Well (AB-11):
Previously this well was standing as suspended in the Six Hills "E" Formation.?? Following the logging of Six Hills F1 oil pay in AB-16, the well was recompleted and perforated in the Six Hills "F1" interval 3,880-3,939 ft and successfully fraced. The well is currently contributing 55 bopd to Al Baraka production.
Kom Ombo Operations subsequent to the Quarter:
Faris-1 Well
The second exploration commitment well, located 4.5 km south of Al Baraka oilfield was spud on June 26, 2012 and drilled to a total depth of 6,785 ft. The primary objective was to test the Kom Ombo Sands involved in a large faulted structure. The well encountered oil shows in both the Kom Ombo "C" and "A" sands, however it failed to produce oil on test and was subsequently plugged and abandoned.
Al Baraka 17 Well (AB-17)
This step out well to AB-16 well was spud on July 28, 2012.? AB-17 is located approximately 650 m to the south of AB-16 and was successfully drilled to a total depth of 7,527 m in the Basement and logged.? Oil shows were encountered in the Six Hills D, Kom Ombo "C" and "A" sands.? Petrophysical analysis indicate the intervals are predominantly water bearing and the well was plugged and abandoned.

Although the results of our 2012 drilling campaign in Kom Ombo were somewhat disappointing, we are encouraged by the West Al Baraka exploration discovery and its potential for future development.
On the financial front, the company generated funds flow from operations before evaluation and exploration expense of $2.3 million for the six months ended June 30, 2012. The Company was also successful in collecting a significant portion of its outstanding receivables and repay $4.4 million of debt.
