Spanish PM pushes ECB bond buying program

(AP) ? Spain's prime minister is urging the European Central Bank to go ahead with a bond-buying program aimed at lowering the borrowing costs of debt-ridden governments like his own, saying in comments published Sunday that eurozone state financing rates need to be similar for the currency union to function.

The ECB holds a meeting Sept. 6 where plans to intervene in bond markets will be discussed, and bank head Mario Draghi has suggested that he was prepared to take "exceptional measures" to restore stability to the 17-nation eurozone.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told Bild newspaper in an interview published Sunday that Draghi's suggestion that the ECB could help indebted governments lower their borrowing costs by buying their bonds shows "a determination to solve the problem."

"A monetary union cannot function when some of its countries finance themselves with negative-interest, while others must raise money with unsustainably high interest rates," Rajoy was quoted as saying.

Troubled eurozone countries like Spain, Italy and Greece have been paying high rates ? with 10-year Spanish bond yields currently at about 6.5 percent ? because bond investors fear they may default. Yet the governments must constantly sell new bonds to pay off old ones that are coming due. High borrowing costs were what pushed indebted countries Greece, Ireland and Portugal to need bailout loans from the other eurozone countries.

On the other hand Germany has been borrowing money at below the inflation rate as investors accept taking a loss to hold the super-safe securities.

"Draghi has pointed out that above all, doubts about the irreversibility of the euro, and not any objective differences in the economic fundamentals of the euro countries, are responsible for this dangerous interest rate differential," Rajoy said. "If we want to preserve the euro, which has brought us greater prosperity, then we must send an unmistakable signal that there will be no going back."

The ECB's plans have sparked a fierce debate in Germany, which is the biggest backer of Europe's financial rescue efforts. The country's national central bank is against the bond-buying idea, along with many academic economists, conservative politicians and voters. They argue that it puts taxpayer money at risk and breaks the European Union treaty provision barring the ECB from directly backing governments.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has indicated she's open to the ECB's plans and has publicly admonished members of her governing coalition to tone down angry remarks about debt-stricken countries such as Greece.

Merkel is scheduled to meet with Rajoy in Madrid on Thursday, the same day the ECB holds its meeting to talk about the bond issue.

Key questions remain about how the ECB purchases would work and how big they might be, but Draghi has said the bank's help would only come if the countries first ask for help from the region's bailout fund and agree to take steps to reduce their deficits and debt levels.

Rajoy said Spain has already demonstrated a willingness to take such measures, and had no problem with Draghi's need for conditions.

"We are also aware of our public finance problems, and that we need to undertake further reforms," he said.

He also said the eurozone should do anything possible to prevent a Greek exit, saying that if the country left it would be a "gigantic blow not only for Greece but for the whole European Union."

"The Greeks and the rest of us must show that Europe is able to solve this problem..." he said. "A withdrawal of Greece would be an indictment of the entire EU."

Syrian troops shell neighborhoods in Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian activists say government troops are shelling neighborhoods in Damascus after overnight clashes with rebel fighters.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the bombardment of the southern neighborhood of Tadamon early Saturday followed street fighting with rebels there.

Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, says troops also shelled the nearby neighborhood of Hajar Aswad.

Syrian regime forces have been able to recapture most areas of the capital that rebels seized in a July offensive.

But the opposition fighters continue to stage attacks using hit-and-run tactics in Damascus neighborhoods where they enjoy popular support, such as in Hajar Aswad, Tadamon and Qaboun.

Activists say more than 20,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March last year.

Apple wants 4 more Samsung products added to suit

SAN JOSE, Calif.?Fresh off its court victory over Samsung Electronics Co., iPhone maker Apple Inc. is asking a federal court to add four more of its rival's products to the list of patent-infringing products.

Apple filed documents in San Jose federal district court on Friday asking a judge to end Samsung's release of "copycat products," and urged the court to pull Samsung products released after its lawsuit was filed in April.

The new products include Samsung's new Galaxy S III smartphone.

Previously Apple had listed 17 Samsung products as patent violators, but the new filing lists 21.

Apple was awarded $1.05 billion by a jury on Aug. 24, finding Samsung had copied Apple's design innovations.

A Samsung representative did not immediately return a request for comment Friday.

Movie review: D'Souza takes viewers on a shocking journey through ...

Posted on31 August 2012.

Dinesh D?Souza, author of New York Times bestseller ?The Roots of Obama?s Rage? among other political books, has made an impact on society with his new documentary, ?2016: Obama?s America.? The film was being screened in select theaters but is now making its way across the country.

In collaboration with filmmaker Gerald R. Molen, who is best-known for producing ?Jurassic Park,? ?Twister? and ?Schindler?s List,? D?Souza takes viewers on a journey through Obama?s life and sheds light on some important aspects that may influence the upcoming election.

D?Souza begins the film by talking about his own struggles in adapting to life in America after immigrating from India, as well as how he got involved in politics over the years. He then presents his research on Obama?s life from the beginning.

The film continually returns to one theme: ?Love him, hate him, you don?t know him.?

?2016: Obama?s America? takes the viewer on a voyage through Obama?s childhood and adulthood, right up until the present day. We are taken through his triumphs and hardships which have ultimately shaped the person he has become.

The visual effects were creative and attention-grabbing, as different charts and pictures illustrated the changes Obama has made to the economy, healthcare and other key issues during his administration.

D?Souza also incorporates several personal interviews that give the audience some insight into Obama?s leadership methods and what the future may look like. He refers to Obama?s book, ?Dreams From My Father,? and visits different places where Obama grew up in order to get a better connection with his subject and a better understanding of his life. D?Souza also meets with people who played key roles in Obama?s childhood.

The overall message of the film does not necessarily say, ?Don?t vote for Obama.? However, some key points D?Souza brings up in the film have a negative connotation for Obama?s presidency and where he stands in his bid for reelection.

Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, ?2016: Obama?s America? is worth checking out this weekend. You may not agree with some of the film?s points, but for the insight it offers, it?s well worth watching.

Man 'Obsessed With Fox News' Allegedly Said He ... - Business Insider

After allegedly driving recklessly with his girlfriend in the car and laughing about killing her, a Florida man told sheriff's deputies his political beliefs made him do it.

David Kappheim, 60, told Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies ?he was very conservative and (his girlfriend) was a liberal" so he "felt that he was going to have to kill her,? The Palm Beach Post reported Thursday.

Kappheim's arrest came after his girlfriend told police he had threatened or harmed her on a number of occasions.

The unnamed girlfriend said Kappheim choked her on Sunday, cutting off her breath and then threatened to "kill her and burn her home" the following day, WPTV reported Thursday.

Then on Tuesday, the woman said she agreed to let Kappheim borrow her car as long as he drove her to work. When he began driving recklessly she claims to have told him feared for her life, to which "he laughed out loud," according to WPTV.

Kappheim admitted to trying to kill the woman three times, police said.

Deputies said they found documents inside the woman's apartment indicating Kappheim is "obsessed with Fox News and the Republican Party, and that he may be a danger to others," the Post reported.

Kappheim is being held without bail at the Palm Beach County Jail.
